Seeking therapy is a huge step and a wonderful choice to make to invest in your self-care! Believe it or not, you DESERVE this one-on-one time, no matter what your circumstances are. We hear it quite often from clients that they feel ashamed or guilty about seeking therapeutic help because they may be comparing their problems to others, and believe their problems “aren’t big enough” to warrant this kind of help. There will always be someone out there with problems “bigger” than yours, but it’s your life and you deserve whatever support helps you to live it fully! Or you may have been brought up to believe that asking for help is a sign of weakness. We actually consider it a strength when you know your own limits and make the effort to take care of yourself. So even if you’ve finally made the difficult decision to try therapy, it’s very normal to be anxious about your first appointment and want to know more about what to expect:

  • After scheduling, you will receive a link to your secure Patient Portal where you can complete all intake paperwork and fill out your insurance and demographic information prior to your first appointment. This way we do not waste time on initial “housekeeping” and it allows us to have more time to focus on whatever you want to talk about.

  • Therapists allot an hour for all individual therapy sessions, and sessions may run from 45-60 minutes.

  • For appointments for children, parents will be given the opportunity to talk privately with their child’s therapist at the start of every session to go over any areas of concern, and may be invited to join the end of the session to review strategies or problem-solve together.

  • For our adult clients, the hour is yours! While your therapist will develop treatment goals with you at intake, remember that this is YOUR time, and it is meant to be what you need. We are prepared to “stick with the plan” each session, or be flexible to discuss or work on whatever your area of need is at that time.

  • Expect your therapist to spend the next couple sessions getting to know you as a person and seeking clarity about your personal circumstances as you begin to establish and work on your goals.

  • Expect your therapist to be compassionate and responsive to your feedback. Therapy is tailored to the individual and if we are getting it wrong, do not hesitate to tell us! We do not take it personally and do not want to waste your time, so please feel comfortable telling us what you need out of our sessions together so this can be a productive and positive experience for you.
